MySpace: dinosaur or phoenix?
By Jordana | May 21st, 2009
Way way back in 2005 there was a revolutionary site where you could mark out your own personal territory in cyberspace, meet new people, and seek out new ways to bore everyone you knew to tears with the mundane details of your lives – that site was called MySpace. Back in the day it was all the rage, but now ask around for anyone who has recently joined the site and you’d be met with a keen silence. MySpace is losing the social network wars to Facebook, that ultra-white and clean social media giant that has everyone and their grandma signing up. The numbers are clear here; MySpace is an endangered creature. However, there could be a solution for MySpace; rather than continue to generalize, maybe they should specialize. For awhile now MySpace has been known to be a great hub for musicans to post up their music and reach out to fans – artists, like Lady Sovereign, even got their start on the site! While the fans are fleeing to Facebook, the musicians are left behind, but is that really such a bad thing? If MySpace could revamp itself as a space for music then they could concentrate on a niche market and still be successful, if smaller than they are now.
Their situation is rather similar to that of a climber trapped under a rockslide: do you cut off a limb and survive, or keep yourself intact and die? What do you believe are MySpace’s odds?
