PS3 and XBox Integrate Social Media

By Jordana | November 18th, 2009

On today’s Engadget, I was pleasantly surprised to hear about Sony’s foray into integrating social networks with the Playstation 3. Consoles already allow for chat functionality and friend lists via their internal networks, but this was the PS3’s first foray  into the outside world’s social networks.  The latest firmware update, 3.10, will contain the new plug-in that allows users to access their Facebook accounts via their PS3, but before you get all excited, there’s a major catch.  Sony hasn’t quite jumped into the pool with Facebook – they’ve more dipped their toe in.  Users may only update their Facebook status via the PS3 and they may only do specific, pre-written status updates connected to certain events such as new game purchases, trophies, and specific game events.  Basically, they are making you into a voluntary marketer for Sony.  I’m not a gamer myself, but what exactly would be the draw in enabling this Facebook functionality?

A much better example of social media integration is on the XBox.  Not only does Xbox allow for major integration with Facebook, they also allow you to access your Twitter, last.fm, and Zune accounts!  The Facebook integration is pretty slick, allowing you to browse photo albums, profiles, add friends, link your Xbox live friends list with Facebook, and allow you to write your own status updates!  The Twitter integration is pretty neato as well, although it would be nice if you could see more than 4 tweets on the screen at a time.

Overall, I would have to give the edge to Microsoft this time around.  Personally, my experiences with Sony have always been a bit lacking in the user interface department.  The importance of a user-friendly and useful interfaces will only increase as computers and consoles become increasingly integrated.  Sony, it’s time to play catch up!  Check out XBox’s features below and you’ll see what I mean.
