Facebook’s population tops U.S.

facebookTake a moment and think about exactly how many people live in the United States. Cities like New York City, Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago positively teem with people. And there are hundreds of small cities and towns you’ve never heard of, that still have thousands and thousands of people living in each one. Now imagine that huge mass of people all posting on your Facebook wall. It’s kinda terrifying.

On Tuesday, Facebook announced they have topped 300 million members. The twenty-five year old CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the opportunity to thank his users for signing up in such crazy numbers and making him very, very rich. Well, he didn’t mention the money thing, but he was definitely thinking it.

The crazy thing is how quickly they’re growing. It took them five years to hit the 150 million mark. But their second 150 million took only nine months. If they keep growing at that rate they’ll have about 20 billion users in five years or so. Well, that’s assuming we quickly make contact with another populated planet or two, and the aliens love Facebook as much as we all do.

Even crazier, Mr. Zuckerberg also took the opportunity to announce that Facebook is now turning a profit. Which sort of adds insult to injury for the poor United States. Not only is Facebook more populous, it’s not running a deficit. The news of profitability came as a bit of a surprise to observers, though. Earlier, the company had suggested they wouldn’t start actually making money until “some time in 2010″. But somehow, some way, the folks in charge of Facebook figured out how to turn a website with 300 million avid and frequent users into something that can make money.
