Pizza Hut (over)Delivers On Their iPhone App
By Nick | August 1st, 2009When most people think of innovative software, names like Apple, Microsoft, or Google come to mind. One that probably doesn’t, however, is Pizza Hut. That is for good reason.
It appears Pizza Hut has redirected their crack R&D labs from finding new ways to cram more cheese into a ball of dough to creating a overly ambitious iPhone App. The application does all of the things you might expect it to: like allowing you to browse Pizza Hut’s menu and order from within the app (If you live in the US). What is impressive is that they didn’t rest on their laurels and stop there. Oh no. They kept adding features until they ran out of ideas. My guess would be that they allocated way too much money for this application and needed to invent new ways to spend it. You can drag and drop ingredients on your pizza, virtually shake sauce onto your wings, collect coupons, save favourite items, and even play a mini pizza delivery racing game. You can tilt the phone to slide off extra toppings on your pizza. Seriously, next time they have this much cash just lying around they should give us a call.
Unfortunately, even with all of this development money laying around they never managed to get the basics right. A quick browsing of reviews shows that this application crashes frequently, doesn’t have an iPhone friendly registration page, and even charges you more than pizzahut.com for some items. The virtual pizza revolution may have to wait for a few more iterations.
If you have a hankering for this kind of pizza multimedia experience, but are living North of the border like us, we have a handy guide to help you recreate, and outdo, Pizza Hut’s official offering.
- Download a bunch of iPhone games (Recommended: Flight Control, Enigmo, and Worms)
- Order a pizza from one of the hundreds of better restaurants in Vancouver (Recommended: Nat’s New York, Rocky Mountain Flatbread, or at least Panago)
- Do something better with your time than shaking virtual chicken wings
